Video decoding packs
Ok, people ask me about this alot, so here is some info on video decoding in Windows and Mac OS. Natively, neither operating system supports most of the codecs you find in use on the internet today. For a long time, it was a pain to have to find and download every codec you would wind up needing to view a particular file. Two packs, however, have sprung up that will fill the void in your media player.
First, for Mac OS, is Perian. Perian supports most container formats (matroska, avi, and divx) as well as most video encoding types (ms-mpeg4 v1 and v2, divx, 3ivx). It integrates with the Quicktime Player. You may still need the Xvid component available here.
For Windows, I have to recommend the CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack). This is an all inclusive codec bundle for Windows that allows Windows Media Player to play just about anything. It's a quick and simple install with no hassle.
